6 Steps To Choosing the Right Camcorder

Yes, there are masses of camcorders out there to choose from nowadays, but with such a huge choice, how can you be sure to end up with the perfect one?

Our advise? Before you stampede to the nearest electronic shop, do a bit of research, know what your needs are, and then see our five steps below. You won’t regret it!

1. Know What Features You Want

Different camcorders obviously have different features, and if you are looking at a digital model especially, you should have plenty to choose from.
Some features may be important to your needs, others not – so it is worthwhile to familiarise yourself with what is available by reading a brochure perhaps, and make a note of them.

An essential feature you should be aware of is some kind of Image stabilisation. This will improve any shakiness in the picture quality taken during filming. Make sure you purchase a camcorder with a built-in system of this, whether you are an advanced or beginner, there should be a large selection to choose from depending on your model. Other important features to look out for are the zoom function and resolution.

2. Know How Much You Are Prepared to Spend For Quality

Prices for camcorders vary according to manufacturer, and of course, the retailer. Depending on what you want, you should shop around with the different manufacturers and shops keeping in mind not to sacrifice too much quality for a cheaper price.

3. Consider Size and Portability

Size and portability are important aspects to be aware of – obviously if you plan to carry it around a lot, you’ll need a smaller model and should stay away from the analogue or tape models. You should also think about purchasing a case as well, which will keep the camcorder protected and secure, as well be useful for carrying around peripherals like tapes or discs, batteries, the manual and so forth.

4. Consider The Batteries

Each manufacturer uses their own specific type of batteries, so be sure that the make and model you choose uses batteries that suit your needs – in length, life, cost, size and availability. Many don’t realize that new batteries can be quite expensive – some up to £50, and can be a “hidden cost” one should factor in to the camcorder’s price.

5. Consider the Editing

It is important for some people to be able to edit the footage taken with their camcorder easily and effectively. Others are happy with a simple unedited tape or disc. If editing is of an importance to you, consider digital models rather than analogue as these have the best features for editing purposes due to the LCD display screen.

6. Try Before You Buy

Don’t be shy – always ask for a demonstration, then try it for yourself before you make the final decision.
