Glossary

Dolby

Dolby is a trademark as well as being a patented system for reducing noise and hiss in audio recording. Originally developed to improve audio recording quality.

OCR

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition, and is a method for converting scanned images or photographs to a text file that can be edited using a program like Microsoft Word. OCR programs work by trying to recognise common shapes, comparing them to databases of similar shapes. OCR software is getting increasingly sophisticated, and can be taught to recognise individual handwriting with a good deal of success.

THX

THX is a set quality controls developed by LucasArts that relate to surround sound systems and ensuring the quality of audio. The actual mean of the letters is unclear, although most people think it is related to George Lucas' first movie, THX-1138.
