Basic Computer Glossary

AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port)
A PCI-based interface designed specifically for 3D graphics applications (important for gamers!)

Cache
The temporary "storage area" that holds data from a slower storage device for quick access.

Handshaking
When the server sends an encryption scheme to a client, thereby protecting the client's data during transmittal.

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
A form of connectivity, it offers data and voice communications at much higher rates than regular telephone dial-up connections.

PnP (Plug & Play)
Devices that require very little setup- simply plug them in and you're ready to go.

RAM (Random Access Memory)
A computer's main memory, which is available to any program running at any given time.

ROM (Read-Only Memory)
A storage chip containing the BIOS (Basic Input / Output System).

USB (Universal Serial Bus)
A very versatile computer port that can function as a serial, parallel, mouse, keyboard, or joystick port. Quick enough to support video transfer, USB can also support up to a hundred twenty seven daisy-chained devices. USB rocks.
