GLOSSARY
Activity Report:
it is a document produced by the fax machine that comprises a record
of incoming and outgoing faxes sent. It also provides information such
as delivery failures, redial attempts, etc.
Auto Dialling:
it lets you automatically dial a stored number rather than having hand-operatedly
dial the recipients’ fax machine. It can also be used to attempt
a fax number if it is busy.
Backup Reception Mode:
this automatically anwers an incoming telephone call and can be used
to automatically receive faxes.
Batch Transmission:
this lets you send similar fax to multiple fax machine at one time.
Document Feeder:
it is a tool used to keep a number of pages of an outgoing fax and feed
each page into the fax machine orderly.
Halftone Control:
fax machines receive faxes in black and white, other fax machines provide
halftone controls that permit the user to configure how convert colour
or greyscale images such as photographs for transmission via fax. The
various levels of grey in the picture are converted effectively to dots
of different sizes before transmission so as to have a clearer image.
Paper Cutter:
fax machines that use a roll of paper to print received faxes usually
combine a paper cutter that will automatically cut the received fax
from the roll of paper after printing.
Plain Paper Fax:
it is a fax machine that utilises ordinary photocopier or printer paper
to print faxes on.
Polling:
it is a slightly different form of faxing. You use your fax machine
to call a fax number then you receive one. It is used to provide information
services through fax.
Remote Terminal Identification:
RTI allows the sending fax machine to determine the type of receiving
fax machine.
Telephone Answering Device:
TAD acts like answering machine, recording incoming voice messages as
well as receiving incoming faxes.
Thermal Paper:
it is a special type of paper that reacts to heat. A portion of the
paper, when exposed to a directed heat source,turns black. This was
being used during early times of fax machines.
Transmission Speed:
this is the speed at which the fax is transmitted and is based on how
fast a fax machine can send a standard test chart.
Transit Terminal Identification:
TTI is a line of information usually printed at the top of an incoming
fax that includes information of the sending fax machine. This includes
the sending company’s name and the fax number of sending fax machine.
