A very
popular service used by almost all current mobile phone users is
the ability to send SMS, or short messaging service, from their
mobiles to a friend or family member's mobile unit.
Essentially
acting like a two-way paging service without the operator in
between. This very popular service utilizes plain character text
messages which are typed
on the numeric using a determined number of key presses to invoke
the desired character on the phone's screen. Sending an SMS is
not very different from sending a eMail.
An advantage
to using SMS is the lower charges (in some carriers SMS is free)
compared
to calling your recepient. Typically a message sent is about
1/10th the cost of a mobile call, which comes incredibly convenient
when requiring to send a note to a friend overseas.

Multimedia
Messaging
An emerging trend
in all new mobile phones is the capability to send multimedia messages
to a compatible recepient phone. More popularly known as MMS, for
multimedia messaging system, this is a step up from SMS allowing
users to send full color photos, audio clips, and sometimes videos
to a friend or family member.
However, not
all mobile phone carriers currently support this feature. If you
would like to know if your phone is capable of utilizing MMS, contact
your mobile phone operator. Also, charges for MMS messages are about
four to eight times the cost of sending a typical SMS. Other carriers
charge messages sent based on the size, by kilobyte, of the media
sent. |
